  • The REI Denver flagship store is a hot-spot for Colorado natives, locals, and tourists alike. From camping to climbing, skiing to rafting, Denver’s flagship REI pretty much has it all. But most people don’t realize the rich history that exists behind this beautiful building. •
•
Back in 1901, the Denver Tramway Company, also known as DTC, originally constructed the building as their main power plant. The company, which was founded in 1886 by John Evans and his son, ran electric cables and cars all throughout Denver— East Colfax, Park Hill, Broadway, Englewood, and more. They picked the location because of its proximity to both Downtown Denver and the Platte River, which provided a cooling mechanism for the plant’s turbines.
•
During the early 20th century, the power plant fueled Denver’s rapid growth and increasing transportation needs. DTC provided jobs and vital commuter options to workers, which helped the city of Denver flourish.
•
In 1950, after operating for over 50 years, the plant shut down. Fast forward to 1998 and REI purchased the old DTC power plant for its flagship store. The outdoor company spent over $30 million restoring the old building back to its magnificent glory, bringing Denver’s premier outdoor retailer to life. •
Today, the REI building exists as one of Denver’s central cultural hubs and continues to be a cornerstone within of our beloved city.
