The Beer Expert Says…

Great American Beer Festival is coming to Denver this weekend, and with it comes an incredible number of beer events throughout the city. And while it’s the perfect week to get out there and try some new spots, the list of possibilities can get overwhelming.

Our resident beer expert David Broecker is here to help. Before he launched his real estate career, David worked in the beer industry for decades, meaning he knows exactly where to go to find some of the best brews in town. Here’s his don’t-miss list for the week:

FRESHCRAFT This LoDo beer hall is loaded with fun events in the next couple days. Pop by at 9pm on Friday for a mini tap takeover by Station 26 Brewing (Denver) and Indeed Brewing (Minneapolis). On Saturday, they’ll have an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet, a 4pm tap takeover by Trve (Denver) and Green Flash (San Diego), and a 7pm tap takeover by Surly (Minneapolis).

FALLING ROCK. With over 75 beers on tap, this is a great place to go to try some new ones. They’ll be highlighting new breweries all day Friday and Saturday, including Elevation (Friday at 3pm), Epic Brewing (Friday, 9:30pm), Telluride (Saturday, 6pm), Crooked Stave (Saturday, 9:30pm), and more! Check out their full event list here.

STAR BAR. This is one of the best hidden gems in the city. Though unassuming from the outside, Star Bar is a fantastic craft beer bar inside that has a wide range of great beer. From 10am-4pm on Friday, Star Bar will be featuring its Kenny Lagers (in addition to several other lagers on tap). Then at 7pm, join them for the Curiosity Ball, highlighting collaboration projects from across the country, including Creature Comforts, Other Half Brewing, Wicked Weed, and Jester King.

And since GABF celebrates beers from all across the country, David says there’s an out-of-towner that’s worth a try. Melvin Brewing out of Utah is known for their incredible IPAs. In fact, their Melvin IPA earned a gold medal at last year’s GABF, and a bronze medal the year before. You can find it at restaurants and breweries throughout Denver, so keep an eye out and give it a try!

Five Questions, One Broker: David Broecker

David Broecker, Broker Associate at Slifer — Denver

What is one thing we might not know about you? I attended culinary school in Pittsburgh and started my career as a chef in Aspen. After cooking for Pete Coors one evening, I landed the Aspen route selling beer for Coors. That eventually led me into a career as a sales manager in the craft beer industry. Cooking and beer are still two of my passions today!

Local Insider: What are you currently inspired by in Denver? The development of downtown Denver has been amazing to watch; at one point I could see 11 cranes from my balcony alone. What they have done at Union Station is fantastic, and the food and beer scene in Denver is awesome!

What does a day off look like for you? A day off for me varies depending upon the season. Spring means hikes and baseball, fall always means watching football with my wife and friends.

Name one thing on your 2017 bucket list. It is crazy how fast 2017 has gone by. I was excited to spend Labor Day weekend in Aspen for Jazz Aspen. I would say on my bucket list for 2018 is to visit Croatia with my wife.

What’s your go-to spot in Denver? The Barrel Bar at Great Divide is fantastic, and you can always pop across the street to The Source for great food at Acorn.
