Five Questions, One Broker with Doug Landin of Slifer Vail

It’s that time of year again, flowers are starting to bud, weekend trips to the mountains are on your to-do list.  The perfect fit for our interview this month is none other than Slifer Smith & Frampton - Vail’s own Doug Landin. He shares his go-to city guide in the Vail Valley, his must-do list for 2016, and a local-mountain event not to miss this summer in our latest Five Questions, One Broker.

You know the Vail Valley more than most folks, what is on your “go-to city guide” for clients in the city that want a weekender away… When coming to Vail for a long weekend or anytime for that matter, while I like any of Vail’s top hotels, The Arrabelle, Four Season, Solaris or The Lodge, and there are more, I am a huge fan of The Sonnenalp Hotel and Spa. It’s hands down my favorite.  A boutique European hotel, onsite restaurants, particularly Ludwig’s for the best breakfast anywhere, can’t be beat!  For dinner, I have to recommend Mountain Standard as well as Sweet Basil.

Most exciting part about being a broker at SSF Vail… Clearly, the opportunity to live in such a special place and get up every morning to what we have up here is very special.  The most exciting part is having the ability to share our world class valley with my customers.  After 40 years in the Vail Valley, I’m still passionate about skiing and ski with as many of my clients as possible.  Whether from Denver or Mexico City, I do my best to make time for them on the mountain.  This holds true in the summer as well, be it golf or going to The Ford Amphitheater for a show.  I truly do my best to make my customers feel like locals.

Name one thing we might not know about you… Every September, Vail hosts the Vail Automotive Classic, a 3 day event featuring a car and air show at the Vail Valley Jet Center, a car auction at the jet center and much more, followed by a great cocktail party in Vail and the Sunday Automotive Display in the heart of Vail Village.  This is done to raise money for two local charities, Jack Place Cancer Caring House as well as Eagle Valley Senior Life.  It’s grown to be quite a significant weekend always the week after labor Day.  I am the Chairman/Founder of this event.

Who are you currently inspired by… I wouldn’t say it’s a who.  It’s a lot of who’s, so to speak.  Considering the size of Slifer Smith & Frampton Real Estate, I am constantly inspired by many of the Realtor®/friends in my firm.  We are a tight nit group.  A bunch of us try to ski together, ride bikes, play golf and more.  While not a national brand, we are the #1 firm in Vail doing over 50% of all the business in Vail!  I can always discuss issues, ask questons with other brokers who are more than happy to help.  We help one another.  It’s really is great.

What is one thing on your “must do” list  in Vail for 2016… That’s a tough question.  I’ve lived here in the Vail Valley for more than 40 years.  I am blessed that I was able to raise my family here, watch my two daughters grow up in the valley.  I suppose when I think of “Must do’s”, It’s really a function of being involved in our community.  Attending locals events like the Tuesday night free concerts in the summer or checking out some of the new restaurants in Vail are all must do’s.  One of my biggest must do, is something I do every year and that’s making my customers feel at home by sharing “local” secrets and particularly showing them the great stashes on Vail Mountain.  Having taught skiing for 23 years, I love helping my customers get better skiing if they want.  I really try to become their “Local” friend.
